1. How can something
as light as the H & L Half-Log be durable?
Our
intense seven-year test cycle of laminating high-grade
veneers to rigid expanded polystyrene cores has resulted
in a durable H & L Half-Log with
strong glue bonds. These test results have been verified
by more than 100 successful H & L Half-Log installations throughout North America.

2. R-7 to R-10? What about where the logs
stack together?
To simplify the answer to this
question, we ordered a guarded hot box test at an engineering
test lab. This test calculates the heat loss through
a conventionally constructed wall and determines the
reference wall R-value. The test is repeated after
the H & L Half-Logs
are installed on the reference wall. This new R-value
is a measurement of the total R-value of the reference
wall and the siding combined. To determine the siding
R-value you simply subtract the reference R-value from
the combined R-value. This method clearly allows for
the lower R-value in the horizontal seam where the
logs stack together.

Half-logs? H&L Half-log siding does have natural wood
exterior surfaces and so will require some maintenance. The
siding comes with a base coat and 3 top coats of a high quality
exterior stain, factory applied which requires no initial field
application. After the initial installation, we recommend that
you plan to re-stain approximately 4 times in the first 15 years
and as needed after that, roughly every 4 to 6 years. The need
to re-stain will also depend on weather and location.
